The story of Benedict and Sophie is not over yet — and the following chapter starts on Feb. 26.
The finale of the fourth season, part 1 of Bridgerton was literally how the show enjoys to have things: full of longing, tension, and a question that nobody is willing to forget. Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) and Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) succumbed to the attraction between them after four emotionally charged episodes. But just as it became apparent, Benedict confused the whole situation by making one suggestion: Be my mistress?
Sophie left unanswered.
At this point, a new preview of Part 2 released gives it clear that neither of them will be able to disregard that moment long.
An Unfinished Question, A Secret, and A Study
At the beginning of the clip, we see Sophie in the Bridgerton study, a place that is not only full of books. Benedict has been secretly stashing his drawings and paintings there including those that are the work of the mysterious Lady in Silver, the alluring lady that he had encountered at a masquerade ball thrown by his mother.
What he doesn’t realize? Sophie is that woman.
When she runs across the romantic portrait she has to face the extent of the enthralling interest of Benedict. The feeling is increased after he enters in the room unexpectedly. Their relationship is direct, quick, unsophisticated.
Yerin Ha has alluded to the emotional tension that Sophie in this relationship experiences. The fact that she has to work under the same roof with the man who wants her implies close control over the composure. However, the world she had built starts to unravel as soon as the interest of Benedict is drawn to her.
Adoration, Race, and a Troubled History
Sophie does not fear posing the right questions in the scene. She points at the picture and inquires who was the woman who inspired it. Benedict tells her not to worry that his heart was with Sophie — but the audience is aware that there is a lot to it on his previous proposal.
Sophie is not merely indecisive in love. Her life history justifies the reason why the thought of becoming the mistress of a person is very torturous.
She was a result of a liaison between Lord Penwood and a maid. Although she was brought up under the care of her father when she was still a young girl, the scenario took a different turn when her father got remarried to Araminta Gun. Sophie was deprived of her status and made a slave in her own home after the death of Penwood.
It was a traumatic experience especially in matters of power, security, and social status.
The internal conflict in Sophie has been addressed by showrunner Jess Brownell. Even though the social norms are very strict, Sophie continues to wish that maybe Benedict will not be drawn to his social status. But she does not want to repeat the cycle that formatted her childhood.
Will she dare to trust in anything beyond the regulations of the ton?
What’s Ahead in Part 2
The following episodes will intensify the emotional and romantic tensions, which, according to the preview, will happen. Since covert interactions in dark rooms to one that is hinted at in the trailer such as one that uses water, which fans are already theorizing about, the plot seems poised to explore more deeply into the relationship between Benedict and Sophie.
Even Luke Thompson has proposed that there is a meaning behind the repetitive imagery of water between the two. The initial actual bond between them was the mentioning of going deeper together. Now, such metaphor can be reality at last.
Naturally, their love affair is not developing in a vacuum. Part 2 will also re-enter the larger Bridgerton world. Violet Bridgerton, Lord Marcus Anderson, Francesca and Lord John Stirling, and even Kate and Anthony come back, though now with their baby to act as a new dynamic to the family.
The Big Questions
- Will Benedict know that it is none other than the first woman he had first imagined during the masquerade?
- Will Sophie take an offer that puts to test all that she has struggled against?
- And above all, is it really possible to love beyond the strict divisions of Regency society?
It will not take long before fans get their way. Part 2 of Bridgerton Season 4 debuts on 26 Feb. — and based on this preview, the most emotional scenes are yet to come.
